In 2022, Crouch Waterfall embarked on a pivotal project commissioned by Centregreat, tasked with the like-for-like design of a vital historic Tidal Gate nestled in Truro, Cornwall. The aged flood defence system had succumbed to disrepair, necessitating a complete replacement while preserving its cherished historical aesthetics. This endeavour blended modern engineering with a commitment to honouring the gate’s rich heritage, ensuring both functionality and visual continuity.

To facilitate the tidal gate design, Crouch Waterfall embarked on meticulous site visits and thorough condition surveys. These visits involved capturing essential features and obtaining precise measurements, particularly of the crucial steel sections and existing features. Utilising a combination of photographs, measurements, and detailed notes, the team ensured comprehensive documentation. To bolster accuracy, a Matterport laser scan was deployed to record further detail for later reference. The information gathered allowed Crouch Waterfall to seamlessly transition into the structural design phase, crafting drawings and structural calculations with meticulous attention to the gate’s functionality and long-term durability.

The project’s success, marked by brilliant design proposals, revitalised the Tidal Gate to its former glory. Key factors contributing to this achievement included extensive preliminary and condition surveys, clear communication among engineers, technicians, and clients, and the incorporation of modern materials such as anti-corrosion treatments and grp ensuring the structure’s longevity in relation to its harsh environment.
