Project Type:
Platform Refurbishment and Replacement Waiting Shelter

Knighton Railway Station, located on the Heart of Wales Line, serves the market town of Knighton which is located on the border between Wales and England.

It was proposed to refurbish one of the 2 platforms at the station which consisted of a loose granular material which had resulted in the surface becoming irregular and  herefore a potential trip / slip hazard. The platform was also prone to localised flooding. It was proposed to carry out a full re-profiling of the platform with asphalt surfacing, lso incorporating a surface water drainage solution by installing channels discharging intosoakaway trenches located at the rear of the platform.

In addition, the existing waiting shelter located on this platform was to be replaced with a new structure, matching the corresponding structure located on the adjacent latform. The shelter was designed to comprise of a face brick enclosure, timber dagger boards, nonslip quarry tile flooring, treated timber rafters, treated timber wall plates and a steel profile roof covering. Steel columns were designed to support the roof.

Ancillary works were also undertaken as part of the scope, including adjustments to the S&T service route running through the re-surfaced area and tactile pavement rovision along the length of the platform.
